The best places to visit in the area
If you enjoy the countryside, you can spend a few hours outdoors in our orchard and participate in the apple harvest, which includes tasting locally grown fruit freshly picked from the tree. If you enjoy mountain scenery, ancient forests, and spontaneous herbs, you can accompany us in our mountain hut, located at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level. In it, we grow potatoes, beans, and cabbages.
Unusual itineraries
You can start by visiting the old town centre of Tolmezzo, which was originally surrounded by walls. Porta di Sotto is the last of the original three city doors to still remain standing. From there you can take a comfortable hiking trail to Pra Castello (Castle Meadow), where the town's castle once stood, and whose foundations are still visible. The trail continues to the Picotta Tower, a lookout tower in Roman times that has been rebuilt. From the tower you can admire the whole valley and the St. Mary of the But's Church, which is older and more important than the Cathedral of Tolmezzo.
Recommended restaurants
Tolmezzo and its surrounding area offers a varied choice of restaurants, pizzerias, taverns, and pubs.Among the restaurants, we recommend the „Bar Trattoria Carnia - Da Modesto" (for pizzas and traditional Carnic cuisine), "La Bella Carnia" (for a varied pizza menu) , and "La Corte Dei Sapori" (a restaurant). In the "Trattoria Al Borgat", an old traditional local establishment, you will be able to enjoy the renowned Sauris Ham and a good glass of wine.
Local dishes
Frico (melted cheese) with potatoes, crumbly frico, venison, a variety of cheeses, brovada (sour turnips) or sauerkraut with Carnic sausages, freshly picked mushrooms, polenta (cornmeal mush), cjarsons (Carnic ravioli), potato gnocchi, pumpkin gnocchi with smoked ricotta and clarified butter, minestrone with beans, wild herbs omelette, and dandelion leaves with pork seasoning.
